Omoi no Kakera (Fragments of Love)

This manga was very sweet and cute and nice for reading. It’s the first yuri I’ve read but I really liked it. It’s a story about love, one sided one, lust, insecurities, friendship, support… It’s really easy to recognize a lot of the events from manga in real life. The only different thing is that here are mostly girls falling in love with girls.

In a way, the main character is Takaoka Mika. I really liked her, as a character, she’s really down to earth, she has a nice way of thinking, she’s sharp and good at noticing things around her and people close to her.

She many times has a good advice for someone and she’s good at pointing what’s really the problem. Her only “fault” is that she was really hurt by her first love and, since then, she closed off her heart because of the fear that she might get hurt again. To overcome that, an encounter with Harada Mayu will be crucial, for both of them.

There’s a story about Matsumodo Takako and Harada Yui too. You’ll get to see how and why they’ve met in school, how will their relationship change over time and to what lengths they are willing to go so the can support each other.

The art was pretty nice too and I’m sure I’ll check some other manga written by Takemiya Jin.

My Top manga

I really like reading manga. Since reading Fruit Basket and after it Hana Yori Dango (my first two manga I’ve read) I got completely hooked up! Today, two and a half years later, give or take, I’ve completed 796 manga, I’m reading 49, 70 are “on hold” and I’ve dropped 22 of them. On my list for reading next are 544.

I wanted to share the ones that I really liked to read. They are of different genres, some are manga and some are manhwa. There are a few one-shots here but I normally enjoy longer manga (the longer it is, I enjoy it more, if it’s a good manga). I’m just sharing the ones that I gave 8, 9 or 10 points (out of 10). Even between the ones with the same points, there are some that I liked more than others. Anyway, I hope you’ll find something here that you’d like to read. I put the names both in Japanese and English, for you to find them more easily. Also, you have a link for mangaka, to really nice site called MAL (myanimelist).

Hope you’ll like it!

Gold

This manga is based on Ann Major’s novel, “Secret Child” and the art was done by Fujita Kazuko. The story starts by an accidental meeting (in a cabin) of Bronte Deblin, who’s was running away because of her failed wedding, and Mars West, who was covered by blood and running away from the police. Even though they just met, they will share a kiss, right before Mars was taken away by the police.

rsz_4

Mars will spend two years in prison, for the crime he didn’t commit and Bronte will work in a flower shop. Five years later, they will meet again by chance and right before they meet again the next day, Bronte gets into a car accident. She ends up meeting a “mad scientist” (in this case Webster Quinn, a plastic surgeon), who is obsessed by Bronte’s mother, a dead opera singer. He will completely change her face, so she will be a perfect copy of her mother. That will change Bronte’s life and put her in many situations, far from pleasant ones.

She gets to know that there is one more person with the same face, Mischief Jones, who is actually Chantal, Mars’s wife who framed him for murder and who he married just so he can have West hotel. After this, the plot just thickens more and more.

Mars is a good looking man, who knows what it is to start from scratch in life and work hard to get what you want. He is a bitter man, who doesn’t believe in love, until he meets the right person. After that, he is willing to do anything for her.

rsz_18

Bronte is a pretty innocent and naive person. I did like the fact that she wasn’t easily mentally broken and that she tried to survive everything on her way, with a smile on her face. I do like it that she really tries to understand the person in front of her and to put herself in their shoes, but she really exaggerates with it and doesn’t think of the consequences. To me, she looked like a cat with nine lives, since if it was a normal life, she would be long gone. And, it’s hard to accept that, no matter how bad the person in front of her is, she manages to change her/him…

rsz_7

Mischief is a lying, scheming, promiscuous excuse for a human, who tries to use Bronte for her own agendas. Everything that goes wrong for her, and everything that she can’t get, she will blame it on Bronte. That just shows how weak and petty she is. She will use any means necessary to achieve her goals (and when I say any, I mean just any, being it assault, rape, shooting, kidnapping etc…)

rsz_3
What I also liked was the love between Mars and Bronte. I liked it that it wasn’t a “classical” situation where even with the slightest misunderstanding, they would break up or separate. They really do believe in each other and put other’s happiness before their own…

It’s a satisfying read.

Kimi wa Kirakira (You’re Sparkling)

If you didn’t read anything yet written by Yoshino Aki, then this is a very good manga to start with. This is a story about Shinobu, her life and her family. She comes from a family where her father is a pretty known photographer and from whom she inherited love for photography.

rsz_6

After her parents got divorced, she stopped taking pictures. She led a pretty boring life, in her opinion, where nothing seemed to maintain her interest for long. All this will end when she meets an interesting football player Saijou, who will make her interested in taking photos again and who, in a way, will help her decide what she wants to do with her life.

I liked this manga because it isn’t a typical “the girl is head over heels in love with the guy” but she is quiet normal, reasonable and funny.

Her childhood friend Shin is also pretty nice, with feelings for her but doesn’t do anything unnecessary but actually supports her and understands her (for a change).

It’s a manga with really beautiful art, especially if you are up to a lot of great drawings of Saijou, while he is playing football and off the field too 🙂
